The purpose of this
facility is to provide an opportunity for effective therapeutic exercise. It
is appropriate for individuals who have developed progressive deconditioning in
their spine or extremities. This problem may have resulted from a specific
injury or from functional deterioration associated with the degenerative
process. Several important concepts are inherent to this treatment program.
Most chronic musculoskeletal pain problems are as a result of a weak link
about a joint in the spine, arms or legs. This weak link is in the soft
tissues, and frequently cannot be clearly identified by diagnostic studies. When
diagnostic studies show that the soft tissue injury or degeneration has left the
joint completely incompetent, surgery is often necessary to correct it. Most of
the time, however, the extent of the soft tissue abnormality is not so severe
that surgery is necessary. Nonetheless, the injured or degenerated soft tissue
is not competent to do its job. Thus, progressive weakness develops related to
that joint. Therefore, there is justification for a strengthening program. The
basic principle for all therapeutic exercise is the same.
At this facility, the goal is to improve strength, joint range, and endurance
through therapeutic exercise on equipment that isolates the weak link
effectively. The patients are coached in this treatment program by
well-trained therapists. We expect that pain will diminish with improvement in
the joint function. If this does not occur, the patients are referred back to
the physician for re-evaluation. It is our philosophy that passive treatment has
no opportunity to create the necessary structural change to improve spine and
joint function. Even joint manipulation, which can achieve short-term relief of
pain, cannot change the soft tissue incompetence unless it is associated with a
progressive resistance exercise program.
We expect the patients to be motivated to participate in this exercise
program by their desire for improvement in function, as well as relief of the
pain that led them to seek medical attention. Because of this motivation, they
are willing to strengthen the soft tissues by a progressive exercise program.
This commitment will allow them to tolerate the routine aches that are
associated with healthy exercise.
